A meta description is a short HTML tag — hidden from visitors but visible in search results — that summarises what a page is about. It sits in the `<head>` section of your page and looks like this: `<meta name="description" content="Your summary here.">`. Search engines use it as the default text snippet shown beneath your page title on Google, Bing, and other search engines. When it's missing, Google writes its own snippet by pulling random text from your page, which is often awkward or unhelpful.
A well-written meta description is your free "ad copy" in search results: it directly influences whether someone clicks your link or a competitor's. While Google says meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, a compelling description boosts your click-through rate (CTR) — and higher CTR means more organic traffic without spending more on ads. For product and category pages, a clear description that mentions key benefits, brand, or a call-to-action can meaningfully lift conversions from organic search.
