How to fix lifecycle products missing from sitemap on Headless / Custom (I build in code)
Add all canonical product URLs to your XML sitemap so search engines discover and index every product page quickly.
Steps for Headless / Custom (I build in code)
- Build a dynamic sitemap endpoint (e.g., /sitemap.xml) in your application that queries your commerce backend or CMS for all published product slugs/handles at request time or via a build-time script.
- Paginate if needed: Google supports sitemap index files that reference multiple child sitemaps, each containing up to 50,000 URLs.
- Set the <lastmod> tag for each product URL to the product's last-updated timestamp from your backend.
- Reference your sitemap in /robots.txt with a 'Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml' directive.
- Submit in Google Search Console → Indexing → Sitemaps.
What is lifecycle products missing from sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a special file that lists all the important pages on your website and tells search engines like Google where to find them. Think of it as a table of contents for your store. When product pages are missing from this file, search engines have to stumble upon them on their own — which can take weeks or never happen at all for pages that aren't well linked. The "canonical" URL is simply the single, official address for each product page (not a duplicate or filtered version).
If Google can't find your product pages, it can't rank them — meaning customers searching for exactly what you sell will land on a competitor instead. A missing product page is effectively invisible to organic search, costing you traffic and revenue every single day. For stores with hundreds or thousands of products, even a small percentage of missing pages can represent a significant slice of potential sales. Fixing your sitemap is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort actions you can take to accelerate indexing across your entire catalog.
