How to fix lifecycle products too deep on Headless / Custom (I build in code)

Move deeply buried product pages closer to the homepage by flattening your site's navigation structure so every product is reachable within 4 clicks (ideally 3) from the homepage.

Steps for Headless / Custom (I build in code)

  1. Audit your routing/URL structure and internal link graph programmatically (e.g. with a custom crawler or Screaming Frog) to identify all pages with click depth > 3.
  2. Refactor your category data model: eliminate intermediate taxonomy nodes that exist only as organizational containers and have no meaningful content of their own.
  3. Update your sitemap generation logic so that all product URLs are listed at the sitemap root level, giving crawlers a direct path regardless of navigation depth.
  4. Add breadcrumb + internal link components on category and product pages that link back to parent categories and the homepage, providing short-circuit paths.
  5. On the homepage component, render a 'Featured Products' or 'Recently Added' section that dynamically queries and displays products from deep categories, providing a programmatic 1-click path.
  6. Implement automated depth-monitoring in your CI/CD pipeline so regressions are caught before deployment.

What is lifecycle products too deep?

Click depth (sometimes called "crawl depth") is the minimum number of clicks it takes to reach a page starting from your homepage. A product that lives at Homepage → Category → Subcategory → Sub-subcategory → Product is 4 clicks deep. Search engines treat pages closer to the homepage as more important, and real shoppers simply abandon long navigation chains before they ever find the product. "Too deep" typically means more than 3–4 clicks from the homepage.

Google's crawlers follow links the same way a visitor does. Pages buried 5, 6, or more clicks from the homepage are crawled less frequently, may be crawled with lower "crawl budget" priority, and often rank lower even when the content is excellent. For shoppers, every extra click is a drop-off point — conversion rates fall sharply past 3 navigation steps. Fixing click depth simultaneously improves indexing speed, organic rankings, and the revenue those pages generate. It also makes your site easier to use, reducing cart abandonment from navigation frustration.
