What it is

The meta description is a short HTML tag on each page that summarizes the page's content. It typically appears as the grey text beneath your page title in Google search results. Google recommends writing descriptions that are informative, unique, and between roughly 120 and 160 characters long — short enough not to be cut off, long enough to actually describe what the page offers. A description that is too short (like 65 characters) leaves a lot of valuable "selling space" unused.

Why it matters

The meta description is your free advertising slot in Google's search results. A well-written, full-length description tells shoppers exactly what they'll find — products, a key benefit, a call to action — before they even click, directly boosting your click-through rate (CTR). Higher CTR means more organic traffic without spending more on ads. If your description is too short, Google often rewrites it by pulling random text from your page, which can be confusing or off-brand. For international or multilingual stores (like the Chinese-language example above), this is especially important because Google's rewrite may pull irrelevant content. There is no direct ranking penalty for a short description, but the lost clicks represent real, recoverable revenue.

How to fix it

  1. Identify every page with a meta description shorter than 120 characters — typically home, category, product, and blog pages are the most impactful.
  2. Write a new description of 120–160 characters (for CJK/double-byte character languages like Chinese or Japanese, aim for 60–80 characters, as each character is displayed wider; the goal is that Google shows ~120–160 display characters without truncation).
  3. Include the page's primary keyword naturally near the start of the description.
  4. Add a concrete value proposition or call to action (e.g., 'Free shipping', 'Shop the full range', 'Official store') to entice clicks.
  5. Update the meta description tag in your CMS or theme using the platform-specific steps below, then save and publish.
  6. Verify the fix by searching your page URL in Google (or using Google's URL Inspection tool in Search Console) to confirm the new snippet appears as expected.
