How to fix meta description too short on Next.js (Headless)

Expand your meta description to 120–160 characters so Google displays a compelling, complete snippet in search results that drives more clicks to your store.

Steps for Next.js (Headless)

  1. Audit all route segments (app/ router) or page files (pages/ router) for missing or short `description` values — anything under 120 characters needs to be expanded to 120–160 characters.
  2. For the App Router: open (or create) each route's `layout.tsx` / `page.tsx` and export either a static `metadata` object or an async `generateMetadata()` function. Set the `description` field to a unique, keyword-rich sentence between 120–160 characters that summarises the page content.
  3. For the Pages Router: open each page file and use the `<Head>` component from `next/head`. Add or update the `<meta name='description' content='...' />` tag with a 120–160 character string.
  4. For dynamic routes (e.g. `/products/[slug]`), fetch the product/collection data inside `generateMetadata()` and build the description string programmatically — include the product name, key attributes, and a call-to-action to ensure uniqueness and adequate length.
  5. Add a shared `truncateDescription(text, max = 160)` utility so that any CMS/API-sourced description that exceeds 160 characters is safely trimmed, and a `padDescription()` guard logs a warning when the value is below 120 characters during development.
  6. Run `next build` and verify with browser DevTools or a meta-tag checker that every rendered `<meta name='description'>` is between 120–160 characters before deploying.

What is meta description too short?

The meta description is a short HTML tag on each page that summarizes the page's content. It typically appears as the grey text beneath your page title in Google search results. Google recommends writing descriptions that are informative, unique, and between roughly 120 and 160 characters long — short enough not to be cut off, long enough to actually describe what the page offers. A description that is too short (like 65 characters) leaves a lot of valuable "selling space" unused.

The meta description is your free advertising slot in Google's search results. A well-written, full-length description tells shoppers exactly what they'll find — products, a key benefit, a call to action — before they even click, directly boosting your click-through rate (CTR). Higher CTR means more organic traffic without spending more on ads. If your description is too short, Google often rewrites it by pulling random text from your page, which can be confusing or off-brand. For international or multilingual stores (like the Chinese-language example above), this is especially important because Google's rewrite may pull irrelevant content. There is no direct ranking penalty for a short description, but the lost clicks represent real, recoverable revenue.
