How to fix seo category description missing on Shopify

Write a unique 100–200 word description for every product category page explaining what it contains and who it's for.

Steps for Shopify

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products → Collections.
  2. Click the collection you want to update.
  3. In the 'Description' rich-text field (directly below the collection title), type or paste your 100–200 word description.
  4. Use the toolbar to add any basic formatting (bold, bullet points) if helpful.
  5. Scroll down to the 'Search engine listing preview' section to also craft a unique meta description (separate from the on-page copy).
  6. Click 'Save'. The description will appear on the collection page according to your theme's layout — most themes render it above or below the product grid.

What is seo category description missing?

A category description is a short block of text that appears on a collection or category page — typically above or below the product grid — that explains what products are in that group and who they're best suited for. Most store platforms let you add this text through your admin panel without touching any code. Many store owners leave this field blank, meaning their category pages have no unique written content at all — just a grid of products.

Category pages are often the highest-traffic landing pages on an ecommerce store because they target broad, high-volume keywords like "women's running shoes" or "organic skincare." Without a description, Google has almost no unique text to understand, index, or rank that page for those keywords — so it will almost always rank lower than a competitor who has written even a brief, relevant paragraph. A well-written description also helps shoppers feel confident they're in the right place, which reduces bounce rates and increases the likelihood of a purchase. In short, missing category descriptions directly cost you organic rankings, traffic, and sales.
