How to fix low review count on Shopify

Collect at least 5 published reviews so Google will display star ratings in search results alongside your product listings.

Steps for Shopify

  1. Install a review app from the Shopify App Store — the most common are 'Product Reviews' (free, by Shopify), 'Judge.me', or 'Okendo'.
  2. In the app's settings, enable automated post-purchase review request emails and set the send delay to 7–14 days after fulfilment.
  3. Enable the app's built-in structured data / JSON-LD output for AggregateRating — most major apps do this automatically. In Judge.me: Settings → SEO → enable 'Rich Snippets'. In Okendo: structured data is on by default.
  4. To import existing reviews: in Judge.me go to Reviews → Import; in Okendo use the CSV import under Settings → Imports.
  5. Once products reach 5 reviews, paste a product URL into the Google Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) and confirm 'AggregateRating' appears in the detected structured data.

What is low review count?

When you add rating markup (structured data) to a product page, Google can show gold star ratings directly in search results — a feature called a "review snippet" or "rich result." However, Google requires a minimum of 5 reviews before it will actually display those stars. If your product has fewer than 5 reviews, the structured data is ignored for visual display purposes, even if the code itself is perfectly written. This is a content threshold, not a code problem.

Star ratings in search results (rich snippets) are one of the most powerful click-through-rate boosters available to ecommerce stores — studies consistently show they lift organic CTR by 15–30%. Until you reach 5 reviews per product, you get none of that benefit, meaning your listings look identical to competitors with no ratings. More reviews also build social proof that directly increases conversion rates once shoppers land on your page. Every product stuck below 5 reviews is leaving both organic traffic and revenue on the table.
