How to fix missing schema howto on Elementor
Add HowTo structured data (JSON-LD) to any page that walks customers through a multi-step process, so Google can display your instructions as rich results in search.
Steps for Elementor
- In the WordPress dashboard, navigate to Elementor → Custom Code (requires Elementor Pro). Click '+ Add New' to create a new custom code snippet.
- Name the snippet (e.g. 'HowTo Schema – [Page Name]'), set the Location to 'Head', and set the Page Condition to target only the specific page(s) that contain the multi-step process (e.g. a tutorial, assembly guide, or how-to article page).
- In the code editor, paste a valid JSON-LD HowTo block, for example: <script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "HowTo", "name": "How To [Task Name]", "description": "A brief description of what this guide accomplishes.", "step": [ {"@type": "HowToStep", "name": "Step 1 Title", "text": "Detailed instructions for step 1."}, {"@type": "HowToStep", "name": "Step 2 Title", "text": "Detailed instructions for step 2."}, {"@type": "HowToStep", "name": "Step 3 Title", "text": "Detailed instructions for step 3."} ] } </script> Replace all placeholder values with the real step names and descriptions that match the page content exactly.
- Click 'Publish' to activate the snippet. Then open the target page in Elementor's editor, confirm the visible on-page step content matches the schema data, and save/update the page.
- Validate the markup by visiting Google's Rich Results Test (https://search.google.com/test/rich-results), entering the page URL, and confirming it detects a valid HowTo result with no errors or warnings.
- If the page is new or recently updated, submit its URL in Google Search Console under URL Inspection → Request Indexing so Google can crawl and index the HowTo schema promptly.
What is missing schema howto?
HowTo structured data is a special block of machine-readable code — written in a format called JSON-LD — that you add to a page to tell Google "this page contains step-by-step instructions." It explicitly labels each step, tool, supply, and time estimate so search engines understand the content precisely. When Google recognises it, your page becomes eligible for rich results: visually expanded listings in search that show the actual steps directly below your link, before a user even clicks. Without this markup, Google has to guess whether your page is a how-to, and you lose the chance for that premium search placement.
Pages with HowTo rich results occupy significantly more visual real estate in search results — often showing 3–5 collapsible steps right on the results page — which dramatically increases click-through rates compared to a plain blue link. This is especially valuable for "Answer Engine Optimization" (AEO): AI-powered search features (Google AI Overviews, voice search, featured snippets) pull structured, step-based content preferentially when deciding what to surface. Missing this markup means a competitor who has it will own that SERP space, capturing organic traffic that should be yours. For ecommerce stores, how-to content (how to assemble, how to use, how to style a product) directly supports purchase decisions and reduces returns — both of which have measurable revenue impact.
