How to fix missing schema howto on Squarespace
Add HowTo structured data (JSON-LD) to any page that walks customers through a multi-step process, so Google can display your instructions as rich results in search.
Steps for Squarespace
- In your Squarespace admin, go to Settings > Advanced > Code Injection for site-wide injection, OR open the specific page > Page Settings > Advanced > Page Header Code Injection for page-level injection (preferred).
- Paste your complete <script type='application/ld+json'> HowTo block into the Header Code Injection box for that page.
- Save and publish, then validate the live URL with Google's Rich Results Test.
- Note: Code Injection is available on Business plan and above.
What is missing schema howto?
HowTo structured data is a special block of machine-readable code — written in a format called JSON-LD — that you add to a page to tell Google "this page contains step-by-step instructions." It explicitly labels each step, tool, supply, and time estimate so search engines understand the content precisely. When Google recognises it, your page becomes eligible for rich results: visually expanded listings in search that show the actual steps directly below your link, before a user even clicks. Without this markup, Google has to guess whether your page is a how-to, and you lose the chance for that premium search placement.
Pages with HowTo rich results occupy significantly more visual real estate in search results — often showing 3–5 collapsible steps right on the results page — which dramatically increases click-through rates compared to a plain blue link. This is especially valuable for "Answer Engine Optimization" (AEO): AI-powered search features (Google AI Overviews, voice search, featured snippets) pull structured, step-based content preferentially when deciding what to surface. Missing this markup means a competitor who has it will own that SERP space, capturing organic traffic that should be yours. For ecommerce stores, how-to content (how to assemble, how to use, how to style a product) directly supports purchase decisions and reduces returns — both of which have measurable revenue impact.
