How to fix document title on Headless / Custom (I build in code)

Add a descriptive, non-empty `<title>` element to every page so browsers, screen readers, and search engines can identify it.

Steps for Headless / Custom (I build in code)

  1. In your HTML template or layout component, ensure every page renders a `<title>` tag inside `<head>` with a non-empty, page-specific string.
  2. For React/Next.js: use the `<Head>` component from `next/head` or the `metadata` export in the App Router to set `title` per page.
  3. For Nuxt.js: use `useHead({ title: 'Page Name – Store Name' })` in each page component or set a global `titleTemplate` in `nuxt.config.ts`.
  4. For any framework: implement a global title template (e.g. `%s – Store Name`) and override it per page with the specific page name.
  5. Add a fallback in your root layout so that if a page-level title is missing, the store name is used rather than an empty string.
  6. Run an automated accessibility test (axe, Lighthouse) in CI to catch any page missing a title before it reaches production.

What is document title?

Every web page must have a `<title>` tag inside its `<head>` section — a short line of text that names the page. It's what appears in the browser tab, in screen-reader announcements when the page loads, and as the blue clickable headline in Google search results. A "missing document title" finding means at least one of your pages either has no `<title>` tag at all, or the tag is completely empty (e.g. `<title></title>`). This violates WCAG 2.4.2 (Level A), which is the most basic level of accessibility compliance.

For shoppers using screen readers or keyboard navigation — including many people with visual, motor, or cognitive disabilities — the page title is the very first thing announced when a new page loads. Without it, they have no quick way to know where they are, making your store confusing or unusable and exposing you to accessibility legal risk (ADA, EAA, and similar laws). For SEO, the `<title>` tag is one of Google's strongest on-page ranking signals and is the text Google most often uses as your search snippet headline — a missing or empty title can directly suppress your organic traffic and click-through rate. It also hurts conversions because customers lose trust in a store whose browser tab shows a blank or URL-only title.
